Most natural shampoos leave out SLS, the foaming agent in conventional shampoo. They lather less as a result — that's expected, not a fault, since lather does no cleaning.

Shampoo and conditioner bars are the plastic free route: roughly two bottles' worth in a bar, no leaking in a suitcase, and no liquid limit at airport security. Conditioner bars need working through wet hair rather than rubbing on like soap.

Hair oils — argan, jojoba, coconut — are for ends rather than roots.
